The Role of a County Commissioner on
Boards and Commissions

A county commissioner's work extends well beyond regular Board meetings. Commissioners serve on, appoint, and liaise with a network of boards that shape how the county delivers services.

Statutory boards. State law has the commissioners act together as licensing authority, tax appeals board, and social services board, and appoint members to bodies like the board of health.

County advisory boards. Individual commissioners join advisory bodies that bring community and subject-matter expertise to the Board, then carry those recommendations back to their colleagues.

Regional boards. Housing, workforce, aging, transportation, and economic development cross jurisdictional lines, so commissioners represent the county on regional bodies.

Liaison and association work. Commissioners also serve as liaisons to other county elected officials and take part in statewide county associations that shape the legislative agenda.

Together, these roles keep a three-member board informed, give the county a seat at regional and state tables, and give residents more ways to reach their government.
